Why doesn't my doctor want me to go on hormone replacement therapy?

Doctors make recommendations based on the risks, as well as benefits, to their patients. If your doctor does not feel you are a candidate for HRT (hormone replacement therapy) he or she may feel that the risks do not outweigh the benefits. For instance, if you have a history (or a strong family history) of breast cancer, if you smoke or have other medical risk factors, or you are over the age of 65 and are no longer having hot flashes, your physician may not feel it is advisable for you to be on HRT.  It may also be that your doctor does not feel comfortable managing HRT, is not familiar with the research and new studies, or is wanting to be conservative. The best advice I can give you is to ask him or her. It is important that you feel comfortable communicating openly with your doctor so that you can get the answers that you need.
