What is a hot flash?

Simply stated, a hot flash is an estrogen withdrawal effect. Your body is used to high concentrations of estrogen; when you go through menopause your estrogen levels drop. Your body responds to this decline in estrogen with a vasomotor effect, which is experienced as a sudden feeling of warmth or heat that spreads throughout your body—commonly referred to as a "hot flash" or a "hot flush."
