I've been taking care of my family for so many years. Now that I want to put myself first once in a while, they complain. How do I explain my need for self-care to them?

It’s not uncommon to desire some TLC around midlife. Moms who face the empty nest see it as a long awaited chance to pay attention to themselves. When elderly parents pass, we may feel saddened, but we also experience a sense of relief. There’s finally time and energy left over to look after our own needs. It’s important to explain this new perspective to those who are accustomed to our caretaking role. Tell them that being more focused on you is part of a natural transition at this stage in life. Eventually they’ll get used to it and recognize this shift as a healthy change that will benefit everyone.
