I'm finalizing plans for a complete hysterectomy. Once I am on hormones, how long will I be on them?

If you have a hysterectomy and your ovaries are also removed, the doctor will generally put you on HRT to treat acute symptoms of hot flashes and night sweats and the abrupt drop in estrogen, which can also cause depression. The length of time depends on how long you experience symptoms. Generally the acute symptoms last 1-5 years. Some women prefer to stay on the hormones even after the acute symptoms of hot flashes subside for the other beneficial effects the hormones have on memory, mood, libido, sleep and other aspects of your health.
