Can You Eat Your Way to Beauty?

By Barbara Call Bourassa

Can certain foods guarantee healthy hair, beautiful skin, and long nails? While some people are quick to say “yes,” others are a bit more skeptical. “I can't really answer that," says Linda Arpino, MA, RD, CDN, author of Eat Fit, Be Fit: Health and Weight Management Solutions. "Every person is so different, in terms of their inner stress and their hormones. It really varies for every person. Having healthy hair and skin is really part of an entire wellness program." Even so, it’s important to eat a variety of healthy foods in order to ensure that your body is getting the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients it needs. This quick Q&A session will help answer some frequently asked questions:

Q: What types of fruits and vegetables should I eat for both inner and outer health?

A: Chose your vegetables from all five subgroups (dark leafy greens, orange, legumes, starchy vegetables, and other vegetables) several times a week. It’s important to eat as many different types and colors of fruit as possible.

Q: Are fats out of the question?

A: No, definitely not. Fat is an important of the diet; you just have to make sure you eat the right ones. Opt for polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, such as those found in fish, nuts, and vegetable oil (canola, olive, soybean, corn). Whenever possible, limit your consumption of saturated fats, trans fats, or foods that are high in cholesterol or sugar.

Q: And what about carbs?

A: Carbohydrates are important, too, because your body needs them for energy. Just make sure you stick to complex carbs such as whole-wheat flour, brown rice, whole cornmeal, or oatmeal. Do your best to avoid the simple carbohydrates found in cookies and cake.

Q: I’ve been experiencing lifeless hair, skin problems, and weak fingernails. What should I do?

A:If you’re exhibiting these symptoms, you may have a vitamin deficiency. It’s best that you visit a doctor, who will be able to talk to you about proper nutrition or even recommend a multivitamin.
