At-Home Teeth Whitening: Myth vs. Fact

Who doesn't want clean, white, bright teeth? After all, your smile says a great deal about you and can even affect the way you're perceived by others. But teeth whitening procedures at the dentist's office can be quite pricey, so many are turning to at-home treatments. In fact, each year, millions of people whiten their teeth right at home. Before you go about it, it's important to get the facts-and dispel the myths.

Myth: Only expensive in-office whitening techniques can get your teeth really white.
Fact: A study published in the journal Compendium revealed that there is no real difference between bleaching at home and bleaching at the dentist's office.

Myth: Bleaching will damage the enamel of your teeth.
Fact: According to the American Dental Association, when used as directed, bleaching will not cause permanent damage to your teeth or gums. Studies have shown that it's safe to undergo a course of bleaching-two weeks with a drugstore method, for example-once or twice a year.

Myth: People of all ages can whiten their teeth.
Fact: The tooth nerve chamber is very large in children and adolescents. Because of this, they may experience increased sensitivity, and so teeth whitening is only recommended for adults.

Myth: Once you whiten your teeth at home, you'll never have to do it again.
Fact: The color stability depends on how well you clean your teeth, how often you consume foods and beverages that can stain your teeth (such as coffee or red wine), and whether or not you smoke. Chances are, you'll have to repeat the process in about six months if you want your teeth to look as white again.
