Bladder leakage is no laughing matter for millions of women, and the feelings associated with this condition are very real. And for some, laughing—especially suddenly, very hard, or for long periods of time—may bring on the symptoms of bladder leakage. These women may be experiencing stress incontinence, in which small amounts of urine are released during activities such as coughing, sneezing, exercising, or laughing.
But did you know that developing a sense of humor about bladder leakage can be an effective way of coping with your emotions? Missy Lavender, founder of the Women’s Health Foundation (www.totalcontrolprogram.com), explains further. “For a lot of women there’s an embarrassment factor surrounding bladder leakage, but let’s face it: urine is a basic bodily function. It’s best to accept the fact that you’re human and just relax. If humor can help with that process, then go for it.” Here are some more reasons why it’s okay, and even beneficial to giggle about it:
- It helps you to acknowledge your condition and the ways in which it affects your daily life
- It helps you develop a support system, which enables you to feel nurtured as a person.
- It helps you realize that you’re not the only one—there’s a good chance that others you know have experienced bladder control problems as well.
- It helps provide relief from the stress and anxiety of keeping the condition a secret.
If you’re not comfortable talking about your condition or making jokes about it, that’s perfectly fine. Some people don't have the need or desire to share their information with others. It’s all a matter of what feels best to you. If you are having symptoms, though, the most important person to talk to is your doctor—he or she may be able to help you find relief.
